Sponsored by USA Hockey and Chipotle Restaurants, the National Championship tournament is held in West Chester,
\nPennsylvania. It is an invitational tourney featuring the top team(s) from all over the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament is held in the Ice Line Quad Rinks; a four sheet facility made-up of four standard sized NHL rinks and is
\nhome the West Chester University of Pennsylvania men\u2019s and woman\u2019s hockey teams and the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers.<\/span><\/p>\n

USA Hockey 2024 National Tournament Top Scorers<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Sioux City places seven players among the tournamentn’s top ten scorers. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nfor five goals in game two eventually finishing as the tournamet’s fifth highest scorer.\u00a0 Grant Harder<\/strong> records seven goals and
\nfive assists for a dozen points. He had a pair of two goal outings that helped propell the team to the championship; game one
\naginst Rushmore and the quarter-final game he scored the first two goals of the game, setting the pace for a win against Omaha.<\/span><\/p>\n

Karson Fitch <\/strong>would record five goals and five assists; three of his goals are game-winners against Greenville, Omaha and East<\/span>
\nIslip. \u00a0Tegan Doelman<\/strong> would tally three goals and seven assists including the go-ahead goal in the first period of the
\nchampionship game and an assist on the game winner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Blaze Bauer <\/strong>grabs four red-lighters and nine assists. His best outing came in the semi-final when his two goals and an assists
\nhelped the Metros past\u00a0 Bishop Canevin Crusaders and into the championship game.\u00a0 Ryan Hedquist<\/strong> would tally two red-
\nlighters; his biggest is a short-handed game-winner against Bishop Canevin Crusaders in the semi-finals. Hunter Echter<\/strong> has
\na pair of goals and three assists, rounding out the team’s top scorers. His second goal of the week was a biggie-putting the
\nMetros on the board in the championship game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/span>Gunnar Moninger\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Cam Patrick<\/span>

\nGoaltenders Gunnar Moninger<\/strong> and Cameron Patrick<\/strong> take the ice this week during the national tournament. Cam,
\nlike the <\/span>regular varsity season, shoulders the starting position and plays in all six tountament contests. He grabs six wins
\nand surrenders <\/span>only eight goals for a tournent best goals against average of 1.33 and a top three save percentag of .941.
\nGunnar, while serving as <\/span>Cam’s Steve Janaszak,<\/em> did see time in the Greenville game, preserving the Metros <\/span>victory and
\nsending them to the quarter-finals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Both Sioux City goaltenders carry the mail<\/em> for their teams this regular MHSHL season. Freshmen, Gunnar Moninger
\n<\/strong> takes on the starting duties for the junior varsity squad during the regular and post season tournament. He finishs the JV
\nseason with a Mid-West League leading twenty-two victories, thirteen shut-outs and the second higest goals against
\naverage. Another young player, sophmore Cam Patrick<\/strong> suits-up as the Metros varsity starter and does not dissapoint;
\nhe grabs League leading stats including twenty-eight wins, five shut-outs, most minutes played and the league’s second
\nbest goals against average and save percentage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Metros coaching staff is ripe with successful hockey experience. Assistant Coach Scott Patrick<\/strong> is a past Metro
\ngoaltender and State Tournament championship runner-up. During his junior season in net, he was the only
\nIHSHL\/MHSHL player selected as the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and not play in the championship game.<\/span><\/p>\n

Head Coach Jesse Monell<\/strong> is also a past Metro player and a two-time State Champion. He also played three seasons for the<\/span>
\nSioux City Musketeers (USHL). He would return to Sioux City coaching at the high school level eventually winning the<\/span>
\nregular and post season Championship as well as the Metros first National Championship in 2018.<\/span>
\n
\nChris Hedquist<\/strong> is also a past Metro player making a pair of apperances playing in the championship game. His sophmore season<\/span>
\nthe Metros finished as the tournemant runner-up and the following\u00a0 season another State Championship for the Metros.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n2024 USA Hockey Division II (Combined) Participants<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Tournament teams are divided into two different classifications. Division I or Pure Teams are teams drawing from one specific school
\ndistrict.\u00a0 Division II or Combined\/Blended Teams are organizations that will draw players from multiple school districts or
\nsurrounding towns. As Midwest League (MHSHL) regular season\u00a0Champions, the Metros arrive ready to represent the state of Iowa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Divided into four different pools, each team plays their opponents once. Only the first two teams advance to Saturday’s semi-final
\nplay-off round; pitting the winner of one pool taking on the second place finisher of a different pool. Later that day, the winners
\nof both contests <\/span>play for an opportunity to advance to the National Championship game the following day.<\/span><\/p>\n

This first place finish during the regular season qualifies the Metros to represent the State of Iowa in the 2024 USA Hockey National
\nChampionships. Joining the Metros in the NHL Division (Division II) are teams from South Dakota, West Virginia and North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>\"\"<\/span>Sioux City (IA) Metros vs. Rushmore (SD) Thunder\"\"<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sioux City Metros
\n<\/strong><\/span>Who They Are: <\/strong>Located in Sioux City, IA, the greater Siouxland area has a population of approximately one hundred
\nthousand people. The Metros also draw in players in from several surrounding towns as well. They are members of the
\nMidwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL). They have won the league championship eight times. The most recent
\nbeing in 2023 and in 2018 they were also the USA Hockey National Champions.
\n<\/span>How They Got There: <\/strong>The Metros dominated the thirty-two game regular season; boasting twenty-eight wins and just
\nfour losses. They had a pair of players among the top ten league scorers and a goaltender among the league\u2019s best. The
\nMetros head coach is selected as the MHSHL coach of the year.
\n<\/span>How They Did:<\/strong> The eventual National Champions are an offensive force to be reckoned with this year. The team grabs
\nforty-three goals in six games, averaging just over seven goals a game and would surrender only eight total goals. \u00a0Every
\nrostered player would record, at minim, a point and that includes one of the two goaltenders. The Metros top five players
\nrecorded fifty-six tournament points alone and placed seven players among the tournament’s top ten scorers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rushmore Thunder
\n<\/strong><\/span>Who They Are: <\/strong>Located in Rapid City, South Dakota, this team draws players from the surrounding area with an
\napproximate population of 145,000 residence. They are members of the twelve team South Dakota High
\nSchool Hockey League.
\n<\/span>How They Got There:<\/strong> The Thunder finished this season as the state\u2019s championship runner-up, having fell to the
\nBrookings Rangers in overtime. However, the Thunder would still secure this trip to nationals, representing the state
\nas a Division 2 team. <\/span>This would be the Thunder\u2019s third appearance in the state championship game in four seasons.
\nThey would finish the season in second place with nineteen wins during the twenty-two game schedule.
\nNote:<\/strong> The Thunder JV team has played in six of the last eight championship games, winning five of them including the
\nlast three consecutive seasons.
\n<\/span>How They Did: <\/strong>Rushmore would finish the round robin play with two wins and a loss. First defeating Greenville Road
\nWarriors and Wheeling Central Catholic Knights and the mention loss to the Sioux City Metros. This would qualify them
\nfor the cross-divisional quarter finals where they easily beat the Gillette Grizzles (Wyoming) and would advance to the
\nsemi-finals where they would come up short against the east Islip Chiefs (New York).<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong>March 20th, 2024
\n\u00a0<\/span>3-Metros vs. Rushmore Thunder-1\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Both teams take the ice and spend the first dozen minutes getting the feel of their new home rink for the next week. For the
\nMetros that\u2019s over 1200 miles from their friendly confines of the IBP Ice Center. <\/span>Cash Frigge<\/strong> is the first to find the back of
\nthe net when he taks a pass from Noah Grahm<\/strong> giving the Metros the first goal of the game and the lead after one.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nteam a confident lead three goal lead. Ryan Hedquist, Charlie Egdorf and Nate Solma record assists on Grant\u2019s goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\npepper the Sioux City net minder as the Metros slip into a defensive mode, focusing on protecting their fragile lead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>The Thunder would out-shoot the Metros in all three periods, launching thirty-four total shots on net. However,
\ngoaltender Cam Patrick<\/strong> stays nearly perfect, stopping all but one of them. This opening tournament victory sets
\nthe pace for the eventual National Champions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>\"\"<\/span>Sioux City (IA) Metros vs. Wheeling Central (WV) Knights\"\"<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wheeling Central Catholic Knights
\n<\/strong><\/span>Who They Are:<\/strong> Located in West Virginia, Wheeling has a city-wide population of thirty thousand people. Central Catholic
\nHigh School boasts a student enrollment of approximately 300 students.<\/span><\/p>\n

How They Got There: <\/strong>Wheeling Central would defeat the Martinsburg Vipers; winning their seventh state title in the newly
\nformed West Virginia Hockey League. These WV teams also play schedules in other geographic leagues including the Western
\nPennsylvania Hockey League, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League and the\u00a0Kentucky High School Hockey League.<\/span><\/p>\n

How They Did<\/strong>: The Knights would have a short stay at Nationals; recording just a single win against the Greenville Road
\nWarriors and suffering defeats to Wheeling Central and the Sioux City Metros.<\/span><\/p>\n

Round Robin Game 2
\n<\/span><\/strong>March 21st, 2024
\n\u00a0<\/span>17-Metros vs. Wheeling Central Catholic Knights-1\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Game two sees the West Virginia team severely outmatched by the offensive minded Metros. Nine different Metros score
\ngoals in this eventual offensive explosion.\u00a0 However, the first period ends with Metros Tegan Doelman<\/strong> and Grant Harder
\n<\/strong>finding the back of the net. In this seemingly tight game, the period ends with the Metros ahead by just a goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who they Are: <\/strong>Located in Greenville, South Carolina, with a population of approximately seventy-five thousand people the
\nyouth program takes in players from the surrounding area. They play a twenty-two game high school schedule as members
\nof the South Carolina Scholastic Hockey Association as governed by the South Carolina Amateur Hockey Association.
\n(Note:<\/strong> Several of these North Carolina teams also play a full\/partial schedule with other non-conference geographically
\nlocated high school teams.)
\n<\/span>How They Got There: <\/strong>They would finish in first place during the regular season with seventeen and five overall league
\nrecord. This season would also mark the seventh time the Road Warriors have been crowned SC State Champions. Their head
\ncoach was selected as the Coach of the Year for the South Carolina Amateur Hockey Association and is both a two-time
\nregular season and State Champion.
\n<\/span>How They Did: <\/strong>Greenville was another them this weekend with a short stay and fell to all three teams in the Division;
\nWheeling, Greenville and Sioux City.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nscoring affair featuring both the usual scorers and a hand full of new faces getting on the scoresheet. Sioux City puts seventeen
\nshot on goal; three of them from Hunter Echter<\/strong>, Nate Solma,<\/strong> with the game winner and Karson Fitch,<\/strong> find the back of the net.
\nThe end of the first period sees the Metros holding on to a two goal lead.<\/span>

Omaha Jr. Lancers
\n<\/strong><\/span>Who they Are: <\/strong>The Omaha Jr. Lancers are based in Omaha Nebraska. They draw their team members from a city wide
\narea with a total population of nearly a half million people. Omaha also boasts a top tier AAA program and a USHL team
\nwhich are a huge draws for many of the best youth players in the mid-west. The Lancers are members of the three-state
\nwide Midwest High School Hockey League.<\/span><\/p>\n

How They Got There: <\/strong>The team would play a regular season schedule of thirty-two games and finish in third overall with
\ntwenty-five wins and six losses. Despite their six losses this season, the Lancers are predominately one of the top teams
\non a regular basis in the very tough MHSHL. As the top finishing team in Nebraska, they would d grab the opportunity
\nto play in the National Tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

How they Did:\u00a0 <\/strong>Playing in the Liberty Division, the Lancers would grab a pair of wins against the Owensboro Rampage
\nand the Evansville Thunder and lose to the Gillette Grizzlies. This would qualify Omaha for cross-divisional quarter
\nfinals match-up between two of the MHSHL\u2019s biggest rivals, the Sioux City Metros. In typical fashion this match-up was
\na nail-bitter until the very end but the Lancers would fall short to the eventual National Champions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0<\/span>4-Metros vs. Omaha Jr. Lancers-2\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>The USAH Nationals Quarter-finals pits two very familiar teams against each other; the Omaha Jr. Lancers and the Sioux
\nCity Metros. Both teams are members of the very talented Midwest High School Hockey League and finished first and
\nthird during the regular season.<\/span><\/p>\n

In what is an expected traditional battle between these two team, this game does not disappoint. The first period is back
\nand forth, lots of offence but none successful until Grant Harder<\/strong> lights the lamp with just over a minute remaining in
\nthe first for the first lead of the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second, it\u2019s the Team Captain with his second tally of the game; countering an earlier Lancer goal and again
\n<\/span> giving the Metros the lead. Seven minutes later high scoring underclassmen Karson Fitch<\/strong> would extend the lead
\nto two goals, as the teams head to the locker rooms after two periods of play.

\nthe back of the net; cutting the Metros lead to one goal. With just minutes remaining, the Lancers pull their goalie
\nto apply the extra man pressure. But with fourteen seconds remaining, Nate Solma<\/strong> grabs a loose puck and
\nburies it in the vacated net, sending the Lancers home and the Metros to the semi-finals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/span>Who They Are: <\/strong>Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this Catholic School supports approximately 250 students and draws
\ntheir players from the greater Pittsburgh area of a population of three hundred thousand people. This high school varsity
\nleague is divided into two conferences; Gold and Blue and is made up of fourteen member teams of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic
\nHockey League. All of which play a nineteen games schedule in addition to other non-conference geographically located teams.<\/span><\/p>\n

How They Got There:\u00a0 <\/strong>The Crusaders would finish first during the regular season, sporting nineteen wins and just a single loss
\nduring the PIHL season. They would grab the top seed in the State Tournament and after advancing in the first round they were
\nupset in the semi-final game by the eventual state champions.<\/span><\/p>\n

How They Did: <\/strong>The Crusaders would grab wins against the Northwest Arkansas Ice Hogs and the Faith Lutheran (Kentucky)
\nCrusaders and fall to the East Islip (NY) Chiefs in round robin play. They would still earn a berth in cross divisional quarter-finals
\nwhere the defeated the Oseeo Maple Grove (MN) Saints advancing to the semis against Sioux City.<\/span><\/p>\n

Semi-Final Game 5
\n<\/span><\/strong>March 23rd, 2024
\n<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>5-Metros vs. Bishop Canevin Crusaders-1\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>This tournament game marks the first game for the Metros against an unfamiliar, different division top team. The Crusaders are
\na high scoring team recording twenty goals in the last four games and one of their players is the tournament’s high scorer so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opening period sees the Crusaders get on the board first, but a few minutes later Blaze Bauer<\/strong> would tie the game at one.
\nWith just under a minute Ryan Hedquist<\/strong> would tally, giving Sioux City the lead for good. The Metros would dominate this
\nperiod; launching eleven shots on goal and fending-off four short-handed situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to two goals, Blaze Bauer<\/strong> would add an assist for a three point outing. Teagan Dolman<\/strong> would add an assist

\n<\/strong><\/span>Who They Are<\/strong>:<\/strong> East Islip is a township located in south central Long Island and draws players from three different local school
\ndistricts. The Chief play a twenty-two game schedule as members of the thirteen team Suffolk County High School Hockey League.<\/span><\/p>\n

How They Got There: <\/strong>The Chiefs would finish the season tied for first place; with seventeen wins, three losses and a pair of
\nties they would be selected as this season National Tournament representative. This season would mark their first ever State
\ntitle, as well as their return to the National Tournament for the second consecutive season. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

How They Did: <\/strong>East Islip would prove to be one of the tougher teams in the combined division. Winning all three games
\nof round robin play in convincing style; out scoring Bishop Canevin, Faith Lutheran (NV) and NW Arkansas fifteen to four.
\nThey would also post seventeen goals in the quarter and semifinals allowing the Rushmore Thunder and Steinbrenner
\nWarriors (FL) just five goals.\u00a0 Advancing to the championship finals against the Sioux City Metros.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>This championship match-up looks to be an exciting one with two extremely offensive minded teams with very solid
\ngoaltending. East Islip boasts the tournament’s top three scorers and Sioux City the tournaments top goaltender by far.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, in the first period it’s the defense that steals the show with both teams shooting on net a combined
\nthirteen times and both keepers staying perfect.

\nThis is a up and down the ice affair with tons of offence, fast breaks and great saves however, it;s East Islip scoring first
\nand grabbing and holding the game\u2019s momentum for much of the period. However with just over two minutes Hunter Echter
\n<\/strong> would tie the game and just twenty second later Teagan Doelman<\/strong> give the Metros the lead. But the high scoring Chiefs don\u2019t
\ngo away and quickly counter sending the teams to the locker rooms knotted-up at two.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nseconds later Nate Solma <\/b>gives the Metros a two goal lead. As time runs out for the Chiefs they go with the extra attacker, and
\nafter some initial pressure to tie the game, Karson Fitch<\/strong> is able to corral an errant pass and find the empty net securing a
\nChampionship win for the Metros.

Two Sioux City goaltenders carry the mail for their teams this season. Just a freshmen this season Gunnar Moninger<\/strong> takes
\non the starting duties for the junior varsity squad during the regular and post season tournament. He finishs the JV season
\nwith a Mid-West League leading twenty-two victories, thirteen shut-outs and the second higest goals against average. Another
\nyoung player, sophmore Cam Patrick<\/strong> suits-up as the Metros starter and does not dissapoint; he grabs\u00a0 League leading stats
\nincluding twenty-eight wins, five shut-outs, most minutes played and the league’s second best goals against average and
