Practices and games were<br \/>\nplayed outdoors at Hubbard Park (28th &amp; Jones) and Gilman Terrace (Bomgaars\/PetSmart on Hamilton Blvd.). Nearly a total<br \/>\nof a hundred players including close to twenty-five high school aged players would join the new youth hockey program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 16px;\">It costs players under 13 years old $4.00 dollars and players 14-18 $8.00 for the entire season. There is also a $1.50 additional<br \/>\nInsurance Fee,\u00a0however, it is covered by SYHA &#8220;IF&#8221; they sell $10.00 worth of Christmas greens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 16px;\">Securing a location, boards, lights and ice maintenance equipment makes for a slow start to the season. However, the introduction of the new USHL team located in Sioux City increases the<br \/>\nindoor ice availability of the Sioux City Auditorium to nearly fifty additional days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">Second year SYHA costs sky-rocket!!! Prior to this season Joe played for the Sioux City Eagles <\/span><span style=\"color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 16px;\">for three seasons. After coaching a pair of high school seasons,<br \/>\nJoe would return to the youth levels where he was an instrumental \u00a0part of coaching in the newly formed Sioux City youth<br \/>\nhockey organization. Taking on the Head Coaching duties,<br \/>\nAlex brings several\u00a0seasons of both Junior and Collegiate experience with him. Three seasons prior, he was a<br \/>\nstand-out player for both the Musketeers\u00a0and the USHL. Scoring forty-three goals and forty-one assists during<br \/>\nthe fifty game season. Alex is the Musketeer&#8217;s <strong>Most Valuable Player<\/strong> and <strong>USHL Rookie of the Year<\/strong>; he is<br \/>\nalso selected to the <strong>USHL All-Star Team<\/strong> and a member of the<strong> USHL First Team<\/strong>. Before arriving in Sioux<br \/>\nCity he played three seasons for the University of Denver Pioneers and a season before that with the<br \/>\nVictoria Cougars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #065212; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">Another Musketeer\u00a0<b>Mitch Brandt<\/b>\u00a0will take over the Assistant Coaching duties this season. Also a University of<br \/>\nDenver alum, Mitch\u00a0played four seasons for the Pioneers before moving to Sioux City and playing for the Musketeers.<br \/>\nHe was a member of the Musketeers Southern Division Champions and a USHL Championship runner-up teams.<br \/>\n<b>Marcus Rotrammel<\/b>\u00a0remains a staple with the high school team. font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\"><b>Alex Shibicky:<\/b>\u00a0After a single season as a Musketeer (74-75) Alex would return to Sioux City and take over the high school<br \/>\ncoaching duties. The high school team was only two years old, but some of the future great Jr. Musketeers were in their learning<br \/>\nstages and Alex was there to provide the education from a scorers point of view. Team play was paramount for Alex, he ran<br \/>\na tight ship but never lost sight of the importance of the satisfaction of having a game well played. During his three seasons,<br \/>\nhe would lead the Jr. Musketeers to second and third place finishes at the State Tournament.<br \/>\nHis season as a Musketeer was terrific one; his 93 total points led the Musketeers in scoring and earned the\u00a0<b>Musketeer Most<br \/>\nValuable Player <\/b>award. These are the two larges door<br \/>\nyou walk through when you enter the Long Lines sport court area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #065212; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\"><b>Brian Hartman:<\/b>\u00a0Was one of the original SYHA players starting in 1972 playing first for SYHA and then the high school<br \/>\nteam for four\u00a0seasons (74-78). There he was a\u00a0<b>four-time top five scorer<\/b>\u00a0and a\u00a0<b>three-time Most Valuable Player<\/b>\u00a0award<br \/>\nrecipient. Brian was a multi-year League top two scorer; he lead the League as a junior and\u00a0 was second highest his senior<br \/>\nyear. He would lead the\u00a0team to a pair of second place finishes at the State Tournament and a selection to the first ever<br \/>\n<b>All-League Team<\/b>.\u00a0 He is recognized as the first,\u00a0great hockey player to come out of the SYHA program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.syhastuff.com\/DBA%20Metro%20Milestone%20long.png\" width=\"1002\" height=\"32\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Brian Hartman<\/strong> would become the first ever Sioux City player to play for the Musketeers. During his rookie season, he would finish third in scoring with<br \/>\nforty-one goals and thirty-one assists; recording seventy-two points during the forty-eight game season, receiving the Musketeer<br \/>\n<b>Rookie of the Year\u00a0<\/b>Award. Brian\u00a0 would start the Metros scoring on assists<br \/>\nfrom Barta and Pat Ward.\u00a0 Scott would grab his own red-lighter in the second period on assists from Brian and Paul. Finding<br \/>\nthe net for a second time Brian ties the game at three goals each on assists from Scott and Paul. In the third, it&#8217;s Brian to the<br \/>\nrescue again, on assists from Paul and Scott, breaking the stalemate and sending the Metros to the semi-finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\"><b>Semi-Final Game<br \/>\n3-Metros vs. Des Moines Dowling-1<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">March 11th, 1978<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">A pair of Metros goals by <strong>Paul Kambach<\/strong> and another from <strong>Scott Barta <\/strong>propel Sioux City into the championship game.<br \/>\nGoaltender <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\"><strong>Mike Bennett<\/strong> gave a stellar performance between the pipes, especially in the third period when he fended off<br \/>\neighteen shots and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">three power play opportunities. <strong>Brian Hartman<\/strong> would record assists on all three of the Metros goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\"><b>Championship Game<br \/>\n2-Metros vs. Waterloo Columbus-3<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">March 12th, 1978<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">Matched up against Waterloo Columbus, the Metros look to a early-season victory over the Sailors for inspiration, as they take<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">on the State Tournament&#8217;s recent winner two consecutive seasons. <strong>Scott Barta<\/strong> would get the Metros going in the first, but Sailors<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\">goals in the first and second saw the Metros trailing after two periods.\u00a0 However, just thirty-four seconds into the final period, <strong>Brian<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212;\"><strong>Hartman<\/strong> would find the net, tieing the game at two goals each. He was always the heart of the Jr. Musketeer offence; his freshman season he was a top five scorer and the remaining three<br \/>\nseason the Metro&#8217;s Leading Scorer. After high school he played a pair of seasons in the USHL, one in Sioux City and the other<br \/>\nin Austin, MN for the Mavericks. He would also spend several seasons in Holland playing in the Netherlands Professional League.<br \/>\nAfter a return to Iowa where he played for the Iowa State Cyclones D1 College Club team. Eventually he would make it back to<br \/>\nSioux City where he became a Metros Assistant coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Jamie Lempares<\/b>\u00a0was a Jr. Musketeer goalie for three seasons (78-81) Always considered one of\u00a0 the top goaltenders each<br \/>\nseason. He played a full schedule and helped backstop the Jr. Musketeers to back to back third place finishes at the State<br \/>\nTournament.\u00a0Jamie was a great team leader and had a blast playing hockey. He was always the heart of the Jr. Musketeer offence; his freshman season he was a top five scorer<br \/>\nand the remaining three season the Metro&#8217;s Leading Scorer. After high school he played a pair of seasons in the USHL,<br \/>\none in Sioux City and the other in Austin, MN for the Mavericks. He would also spend several seasons in Holland,<br \/>\nplaying in the Netherlands Professional League. After a return to Iowa where he played for the Iowa State Cyclones D1<br \/>\nCollege Club team. Eventually, he would make it back to Sioux City where he became a Metros Assistant coach (1993-95).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>8-Jr. Musketeers vs. Waterloo Columbus Sailors-9 OT<\/b><\/span><br \/>\nFebruary 4th, 1979<br \/>\nThe Metros would meet up with the two-time state champions from Waterloo Columbus. Goals from <strong>Brent Hartman<\/strong> and<br \/>\n<strong>Clayton <\/strong><strong>Wiffen<\/strong> would keep the game tied after the first period. However in the second period it wasps all Sioux City as<br \/>\nthey rammed in four straight goals from <strong>Wade Ridenour<\/strong>, <strong>Pete Baker<\/strong>,<strong> Clayton Wiffen<\/strong> and <strong>Damon Lohry<\/strong>. However,<br \/>\na pair of Sailor goals at the end of the second, shifted the momentum and three more in the third, put them back on top.<br \/>\nNeeding goals quickly the Metros pulled goaltender Mike Bennett-the extra player strategy was a success when <strong>Steve Boyd<br \/>\n<\/strong> tallied with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Forty-eight seconds later <strong>Clayton Wiffen&#8217;s<\/strong> Hat Trick would tie<br \/>\nthe game and it into overtime. Dan was one of the original SYHA players joining<br \/>\nthe program during its first season. Dan was a big defenseman and brought a very physical game to the rink every game day.<br \/>\nHe was known as one of the leagues toughest guys on the blue line. He was a terrific team leader and a great mentor to many<br \/>\nof us younger\u00a0 players. In\u00a0 &#8217;80 he was an All-State Honorable Mention player and in 81 the Alternate Captain received the<br \/>\nMetros\u00a0<b>Pete Inkster Award.\u00a0<\/b>Dan would go on to play\u00a0 two seasons for the Musketeers and eventually become a USHL<br \/>\nlinesman for several seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; color: #065212; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Did You Know&#8230;<\/b>Dan&#8217;s son Jordan would also become a Metro player. During his four seasons (2011-15) he racks up a<br \/>\nMetros all-time record of 327 varsity penalty minutes. He was the other half of a very solid<br \/>\ngoaltending corps. He was a fast reflex goalie and his huge size allowed him to cover a lot of net. Mike was a team leader<br \/>\non and off the ice and during his sophomore season he was an Alternate Captain and his senior season the Team Captain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #065212; font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Did You Know&#8230;<\/b>Mike&#8217;s son <strong>Kyle Bennett<\/strong> would play three seasons as a Metro.
