This is the Start of the fourth decade (2000-2010) of Sioux City Jr. Musketeers/Metros High School Hockey
The St Joe Griffons leave the league and are replaced by the Quad City Presidents. The Des Moines Oak Leafs move to the west division.
The league remains 12 teams divided into two divisions playing a 28 game schedule.
State Tournament held March 9th-11, 2001 in Mason City, IA
East: Ames Little Cyclones, Des Moines Capitols, Quad City Patriots, Dubuque Devils, Mason City Mohawks and Waterloo Warriors
West: Kansas City Jr. Blades, Omaha Gladiators & Jr. Lancers, Sioux City Metros, Des Moines Oak Leafs and the Lincoln Stars
This season makes the 25th Anniversary of the Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL)
The Metros finish third in the west with a 16-11-1 record. They would lead the league in penalties with 644 minutes. Ben Deck would lead
the league in scoring with 48 points and Ryan Dohrmann finish as the league’s third best goalie. Four players would make the All-Star
Team and four players the Chicago Showcase.
The JV would struggle this season and finish tied for last place in the west with a 6-17-5 record. Sammy Schweigert would finish in the top
ten league scorers.

Past Musketeer and two-time State Championship Head Coach Dave Davies again joins the Musketeers for a single season.
Dave put in five previous seasons leading the Metros to the title came four times and winning twice. Longtime assistant coach
Landon Blatchford returns as does past assistant Jeff Gray. After four seasons as the Metros team rep, Doc Dohrmann
decided he’s had enough of flawless officiating and announces this is his last season. He will be missed.
Between the Pipes
Seniors Ryan Dohrman and Ross Patrick retune the the crease for their final season. Loaded with League play and
tournament experience the tandem looks to be one of the favorites to repeat their previous successes. Working a perfect
rotation and spliting the varsity workload; both record winning records of 7-5-1 and 9-6-1. Their combined success is
good for a third place division and a fifth place overall finish.
Ryan Dohrmann
Metros 1995-01
Senior goaltender Ryan Dohrmann starts his last season with a very noteworthy distinction, he has played six seasons
of high school hockey. Joining the Metros as a seventh grader where he would see time in five junior varsity games.
Veteran Ryan Dorhmann would record seven wins, including a shut-out against the Des Moines Oak Leafs, and five losses.
He would win his second IHSHL Silver Glove Award. His .921 save percentage is the third best amoung all IHSHL goaltenders.
Ross Patrick
Metros 1998-01
Also an experienced net-minder, Ross Patrick grabs time in sixteen contests this season; recording nine wins, including a
shut-out over the Omaha Gladiators, and six losses. His .906 save percentag is among the top five IHSHL backstops.

Three junior varsity goalies, Marie Witchey, Travis Shoemaker & Ryan McClennen, would see action this season,
however the JV metros would struggle this season and only muster six wins compared to seventeen losses and five
tie games. Marie would finish here senior season with most of the JV starts and ending with a 4-7-3 record. Travis &
Ryan would also combine for a couple of wins and nine losses and a tie.

For the second season in a row, Ben Deck would lead the way with a team leading twenty-two goals and twenty-six assists.
His forty-eight points is also tops among all IHSHL scorers this season. Also a top scorers from last season; Corey Mozak would
post sixteen goals and a dozen assists and Ricky Nearman seven goals and fourteen assists. No stranger to the hitters list,
Brian Swanson would finesse his game a bit this season and record eight goals for nineteen total points. Freshman
Kyle Rogers would round out the top five scorers with a dozen goals and six helpers.

Brandon Lake sets a new Metros penalty minute record with 97 penalty minutes. Jesse Cowles is a distant second with
70 minutes. Also a top five scorer this season, Brian Swanson finishes with 66 penalty minutes, Andy Vogt a minor ahead
of another top five scorer Zac Lanning with 50 penalty minutes.

Six Full IHSHL/MHSHL Seasons
Goaltender Ryan Dohrmann becomes the first SYHA player to play six full seasons. Starting in seventh grade where he logged time in
five JV games; grabbing his first win and giving up just four goals on forty-seven shots. He would be a part of the back-to-back
Championship team in 1997 & 1998 and help lead the Metros to a runner-up title the following season in 1999.

Metros Ben Deck leads the league in scoring this season forty-eight points. He would record twenty-two red-lighters and twenty-six
helpers along the way playing in just twenty-six regular season games. Ben was also a member of the All-League and All-Star
First Teams and play in the Chicago Showcase for Team Tri-State.

Metros 1999-02 Metros 1998-01
Left: Shown here during his second of three Metro seasons is junior Andy Vogt. Misses just three varsity games during the
twenty-eight game season; recording both four goals and four assists. His fifty-two penalty minutes if fourth highest among
his teammates. Right: Senior Ricky Nearman records seven goals and eighteen assists this season. His eighteen points is third
best among all Metros scorers and his forty-eight penalty minutes just behind the teams top five Heavy Hitters.
Corey Mozak
Metros 1999-01
Corey Mozak would log just a pair of seasons with the Metros. This season the returning sophomore season
he would record sixteen goals including a team leading seven power play tallies, and a dozen assists; his twenty-eight
points is second best among all Metro scorers.
Corey would go on to play his remaining two high School seasons with the Pikes Peak Minors Triple A program before
playing two more seasons in the NAHL for the Helena Bighorns and the Fargo-Moorhead Jets. Cory would also
play two seasons at the University of Wisconsin at Stout before returning to Sioux City and becoming active in the
SYHA program. Cory would join the Metros coaching staff in 2009 as an assistant coach for two seasons.
Ryan Dohrmann
Metros 1995-01
Goaltender Ryan Dohrmann give the Metros a much needed season ending victory over the Quad City Presidents. This win
secures a third place finish in the west division and a fifth place seed at next week’s post season tournament. He would stop
twenty-two of the Presidents scoring attempts.
Jesse Cowles Jeremy McClennen
Metros 1998-01 Metros 1997-01
Jesse Cowles logs three seasons for the Metros. Splitting time between the varsity and JV during his first two seasons.
He records a pair of goals and four assists during his first two JV seasons. Jesse would see significant time at the varsity
level where he would eventually record four goals and six assists in fifty-seven regular season varsity games
Jeremy McClennen plays four seasons for the Metros. He would miss just a single game this regular season. This
season, the senior forward would add a goal and add four assists to his total varsity stats bringing his total to ten goals and
ten assists. He would split some junior varsity time his first two seasons recording seven goals and four assists.

Joel Kempter
Metros 2000-03
Joel Kempter is pictured here during his first season as a Metro, the sophomore defenceman would spend the next
three seasons guarding the Metros blue line.
This season, Joel splits time between the JV and varsity, recording a pair of varsity assists, and round out the junior varsity
High Scorers list with four goals and four assists. He would also receive the IHSHL Academic Achievement Award.
Two seasons later, the varsity Team Captain would help lead the Metros to their third IHSHL Tournamet Championship
in six seasons. During the regular season, Joel would see time in twenty-eight varsity match-ups; notching four red-lighters
and adding nine helpers. He would also recieve his third IHSHL Academic Achievement Award.

Cory Mozak punctuates his final game in Sioux City scoring a hat trick and leading the Metros to a season finale victory
over the Quad City Presidents. Ricky Nearman, Brandon Lake and Kyle Rogers would all add assist on Cory’s red-lighters
during the first, second and third periods. Brian Swanson and Cody Muir would also add goals for the Metros.

Brian Swanson would complete his four seasons as a Metro as one of the teams top five high scorers and heavy hitters.
Always a staple on the Heavy Hitters list he bring his offensive game this season where he would record nineteen points. Brian
always lead by example and was the obvious choice to be selected team Captain as well as the Metros Most Valuable Player.
He would also earn return trips to both the IHSHL All-Star Game & the Chicago Showcase as well as a second selection to
the IHSHL All-State Team. In 2000 he would also receive the SYHA/Metros Dustin White Award.
Charlie Hansen would wear the captain’s C for the Metros Junior Varsity team. Logging time in both varsity and JV games, he would
play a full JV schedule, post a pair of goals and help out on five other Metros goals. He would also record 22 penalty minutes.
Varsity Alternate Captain Ben Deck Varsity Alternate Captain Ricky Nearman
Metros 1997-01 Metros 1998-01
Ben Deck would finish his Metro career is fine fashion. For the second season in a row he would lead the Metros in
scoring, posting Thwenty-two goals and twenty-six assists. These forty-eight points would make him the IHSHL’s leading
scorer, the previous season his thirty-six points placed him among the top six scorers in the league. For the second time in
two seasons he would be chosen to play in both the IHSHL the All-Star Game and the Chicago Showcase as well as a
second selection to the IHSHL All-State Team.
Ricky Nearman would cap-off his three years as a Metro as a top three scorer for the second time. This senior season
saw him record seven goals and twenty-one points. The prior season saw him finish atop the leading scorers with an identical
eight goals and twenty-one points. He would earn his second in a row All-Star Game and All-State Team selections. During
his junior season he would receive the Metros Most Improved Player Award.
Ryan Dohrmann Ben Gill
Metros 1997-01 Metros 1997-01
Ryan Dohrmann would wrap up a terrific career high school career backstopping a team that probably should
have been a tournament contender. He would log fourteen games and finish with a 7-5-1 regular season record. For the
second time in as many seasons, he would finish as one of the League’s Silver Glove Award winners. This season’s .923 save
percentage was good for third place and during the prior season his .935 was best in the IHSHL. During his junior season he
was selected to the IHSHL All-Star Team as well as the All-State Team. During his senior season he received an
All-Star Team Honorable Mention as well as the Metros 7th Man Award.
Did You Know…Ryan Dohrmann is the only Metro player to have been rostered for six (6) high school seasons.
During the 1995-96 season, as a 7th grader, he played in five junior varsity games garnering his first of many wins to
come over the next six seasons.
Ben Gill would log for seasons for the Metros. While not a high production player he brought the size and physical play
to the rink every game. A great team leader and a coaches dream, Ben was always a factor on every game and lead by
example. During his senior season he would log a full season and record a pair of goals, four helpers and 44 penalty minutes.

Brandon Lake Ross Patrick

Brandon Lake would end his senior season as the leader of the heavy hitting Metros. His physical play would
top the Metros heavy hitters list and set a new Metros record for penalty minutes. His 97 Minutes would be a
Metro high for the next six seasons. Brandon would also share top penalty minute honors with three other League
players this season. He would also find the net three times and record six assists. This season found him earning
his second consecutive All-Star Game selection and All-State Team honors. He would receive the SYHA/Metros
Dustin White Award in 2001.
Ross Patrick would complete the senior season with a winning 9-6 record and would also add another shut-out to
his stats. He boasted a save percentage of .906 placing him among the top ten goalies in the league. During this season
he would also earn a selection to the IHSHL All-State Team.
Did You Know...Ross comes from a long line of Patrick goaltenders; his brother Craig worked the crease for three seasons
(1979-82) and his other brother Scott for four seasons (79-82)

Three brothers well known past their playing days are Trent, Brant and Cory Mozak. While all three made a significant impact
on their respective Metros teams, they also all made huge contributions to the SYHA/Metros program, passing along their
playing skills and game knowledge to the next generation of Sioux City hockey players.

Trent would log a pair of seasons with the Metros, recording seventy regular season points and leading the team in scoring his freshman
season and second during his sophomore season. He would finish his high school career and add two more seasons playing for the
Musketeers (USHL) where he saw time in 167 games recording forty-two points and 333 penalty minutes.
Brant would play a pair of Metros seasons, during his freshman & sophomore seasons he would record 42 points and help lead the
Metros to back-to-back Tournament Championships in 1998 and 1999. He would finish his high school career playing three more
seasons playing AAA for the Pikes Peak Miners.
Corey would also grab a pair of season for the Metros recording forty-three total points. During his freshman season, he was a
member of the 2000 Tournament runner-up team and during his sophomore season the Metros second best scorer. Over the next
three season he would log156 games in the America West and North American hockey leagues recording 119 points.
Brant would take the Metros Head Coaching reigns for six seasons. Trent would add a two and Corey three as Metros
assistant coaches. Both Trent and Brant remain instrumental members of the SYHA organization; serving active positions in
coaching, policy making and player development.

open the tournament against the IHSHL’s second best team from Mason City.

Ben Deck would get the Metros on the board half way thorough the first but Mason City would retaliate tieing the game after
the first period. The Mohawks would grab two more tallies before Brian Swanson closed the gap and gave the Metros some
hope. However, two more unanswered Mohawk goals in the third, put the game out of reach for the Metros, sending them to
the consolation bracket.
Semi-Final Game
5-Metros vs. Dubuque Devils-2
March 10th, 2001
Taking on the Dubuque, the Metros still have a chance to rescue the tournament despite that opening round loss. The Devils
managed just ten wins all season and was seeded last among the eight participating teams. Sioux City would jump on the Devils
in the first period on goals by Corey Mozak and Kyle Rogers. The Devils would counter in the second with two goals of
their own. However, the third period is all Sioux City; Joel Kempter tallies, Cory Mozak would grabs his second red-
lighter and Cody Muir puts the game out of reach for the Devils

The Metros would start out the tournament with an upset over the Des Moines Oak Leafs but fall short to second seed Mason
City and eventual tournament champions, the Omaha Lancers.
The Metros finish in the middle of the pack with a 20-13 record good enough for fifth place. Kyle Rogers would finish as
the league’s third leading scorer with fifty-five points. Kyle Rogers, Kyle Jacobson and Mike Axelsen would make both the
All-League Team and All-Strar Team. Kyle Rogers a unanimous selection to the All-State Team.
JV State Tournament held March 8th-10th in Waterloo, IA
The JV rebounds from it last season disaster and finishes in fourth place with a 20-9-4 record just four points away from first place Caps.

Jimmy Peck returns for a second season as the Metros Head Coach. With four past seasons behind the Metros bench,
he can boast four winning seasons thus far; first, second and third place finishes at the State Tournament. Jeff Gray and
Landon Blatchford are both experienced Metros coaches with State Tournament Championship successes. Jeff is a former
player for the Musketeers (USHL) and a member ’82 Clark Cup and National Champiomship team. Landon was a Metros
1991 & 1992 back-to-back state champions. Greg Rogers joins the team as the
Manager and Kirk Lukehart takes on the Team Rep duties.
Between the Pipes
The Metros start the season with an experience trio of goaltenders. Senior Travis Shoemaker, junior Ryan McClennen and
sophomore Beau Erickson will fall into a regular rotation; one that proves reliable enough to combine for a 20-15 record and get
the Metros a fifth place regular season finish. All three goalies finish with winning varsity records. The same three goalies
would take on the junior varsity duties as well, with Ryan taking most of the starts, all three again finish with winning records.
Beau Erickson
Metros 2001-04
Beau Erickson is shown here during his first season as a Metro. The sophomore would be joining the team as the
third member of an already experienced goaltending crew. However, his skills would help him rise to the top and
end up sharing the starting goalie duties.
Beau Erickson would see time in sixteen varsity games, grabbing the first his first of three winning seasons with nine wins
and seven losses. He would also notch four shut-outs against the Des Moines Oak Leafs, Waterloo, Ames and Quad City. His
.912 save percentage is fourth best among all IHSHL goaltender and just misses receiving the League’s Silver Glove Award.
Beau would also see some junior varsity action; playing in eight games and finishing with four wins, including another
shut-out, three losses and a tie game.
Did You know…Beau would go on to play a season in the North American League before returning home to play for the Musketeers
(USHL) in 2005-06. He would eventually log three seasons playing at UConn and five seasons in the ECHL playing for the Ontario Reign.
Travis Shoemaker
Metros 1999-02
Travis would begin this senior year as the Metros starting goaltender. After two seasons of leadership from
past Metros State Championship goaltenders, he would pick up the mantle as the Metros starter.
Travis Shoemaker would see time in fifteen varsity games; grabbing nine wins, including a shut-out against Waterloo and
six losses. He would finish the regular season with .869 save percentage. Travis would also see some junior varsity action
playing in six games and winning four of them including another shut-out.
Did You Know…That’s past Metro player Tim McCormick officiating over Travis’ shoulder. Tim played for the Metros
for three seasons (1987-90) and was an IHSHL State Championship runner-up two of those three seasons.
Ryan McClennen
Metros 2000-03
Ryan joins the Metros for the second of three seasons as a Metro. The junior is part of an experienced goaltending
staff that saw all three splitting time between the varsity and junior varsity schedule.
Ryan McClennen would record a pair of victories at the varsity level, earning a save percentage of .887. He would
assume the starting duties at the JV level and finish the season with a 12-4-3 record, including a shut-out against Lincoln.
He helps guide the JV squad to a twenty win season, recording nine losses and four ties, they finish just four points out
of first place. Ryan will retune next season as the Metros senior net minder and see significant time as the team makes
a successful run at the State/League Championship.

Also a top five team scorer last season, Kyle Rogers would set the pace in Metro scoring with a team leading thirty-two goals
and twenty-three assists. His thirty-two goals is second best and his fifty-five points is third best among all IHSHL players. Kyle
Jacobson would finish in second with thirteen goals and twenty assists. Alex Lukehart would make his first of three showings
on the High Scorers list with a pair of goals and twenty assists. Sammy Schweigert would also make his first showing on the
list with eight goals and thirteen assists. Andy Vogt would bring some offence to the table this season and complete the
season with a dozen goals and eight assists.
Did You Know…in 2016 Kyle Rogers was among the first class of inductees to the Ohio Sports Hall of Fame. After playing five
seasons for the Toledo Walleye, the three-time top five scorer and three-time Team Captain would eventually become the face
of the organization.

Left: Junior Jon Soole played part in the Metros defensive corps. He played a very smart but physical part of the game using his size
and strength to the Metros advantage. He only missed three games this season, grabbing a pair of assists and only one minor penalty.
The following season, Jon plays a large part in the defensive corps that helps the Metros win the State Tournament. He is also selected
the recipient of one of the SYHA’s highest honors, the Ted Neby Award.
Right: Aaron Limoges joined the Metros for his this season as junior. He is selected as Metros Team Captain and is a
Metros Heavy Hitter. He never missed a game during g the thirty-three game grind and recorded four goals and nine assists.
Next season, the senior will help guide the Metros to their sixth League/State Championship. The two-time Metros Captain
and leading defenseman tops the Metros Heavy Hitter list. He garners selections to the IHSHL All-Star Team, the League’s
Chicago Showcase Team Tri-State and is the recipient of another of SYHA’s top honors; the Dustin White Award.

Metros 2001-02
Kyle Jacobson worked his whole way through the SYHA program and joined the Metros as a sophomore where he would finish his
first season as the Metros second leading scorer with 13 goals and 20 assists. He would also record an additional 35 points playing at
the JV level with 15 goals and 20 assists. Even as a young player, his play was dominate and a move to the Shattuck/St Mary’s
upper levels was imminent. After his stop in Minnesota, he would play in the NAHL for two seasons before joining the newly formed
University of Iowa Division I Club hockey team for four seasons.
Did You Know…that linesman above is former Metros goaltended Chad Stewart. He would log three seasons with the Metros
and was a member of the 1991 & 1992 IHSHL Championship team and a member of the 1993 Tournament Runner-up team.
He would move to Omaha a play two more season where he was a member of the undefeated 1995 IHSHL Championship team.
He would play several season in the PAHL before returning home and becoming a USA Hockey Official in 2000 and two years
later a USHL Linesman for five seasons.
Andy Vogt
Metros 1999-02
Andy Vogt would play three seasons for the Metros. His senior season saw him make both the Metros High Scorer and
Heavy Hitters top five lists. He would post a dozen goals and add eight helpers; his twenty points was the fifth highest among
Metros scorers. Andy was not afraid of the corners and he played a very smart game one that kept his physical game in check
but still recording thirty-eight penalty minutes.

Did You Know…that Referee is Tim McCormick. He was a former SYHA and Metros Player, Tim played three seasons
for the Metros and was a member of the Metros IHSHL 1988 and 1990 Tournament Runner-up teams. He would become
a USA Hockey Official in 1997 and spend six seasons working the High School and ACHA hockey leagues.

Andy Vogt
Metros 1999-02
Andy Vogt, while not an official Captain, often carried the mail from the bench to the ice. His great hockey knowledge
and his enjoyment of the game made him a terrific go-between. However, on occasion we could disagree. Here, Andy and
I have a heated discussion, while coach Landon Blatchford feeds him his lines. In the end though, me and Andy remains
buds and he skates away knowing, I was probably right again. On the other hand…I’m not so sure about Landon.
Alex Lukehart
Metros 2001-04
Left: Sophomore Alex Lukehart would split his first season playing both varsity and JV. He would record a pair of
varsity goals and twenty assists placing him among the Metros top three scorers that season. He would lead the Metros
in JV scoring with a whopping twenty-eight red-lighters goals and twenty-five helpers. Those fifty-three points made
him the second highest scorer in the league.
Kyle Rogers
Metros 2000-02
Kyle Roger’s first season with the Metros saw the freshman player make the move right to the varsity squad. Recording a dozen
goals and six assists he would finish among the Metros top five scorers. He would be selected the Metros Rookie of the Year
Returning here for a second season, the sophomore would record a team leading thirty-two goals and twenty-three assists; his fifty-five
points was tops among the Metros team and third best among all League scorers. He would also record a team leading seventy-five
penalty minutes.
Kyle would play in the IHSHL All-Star game and be selected to both the West Division’s All-Star and All-Division First
Team as well as both the All-State and All-League First Teams.
Kyle would leave Sioux City after his second season to play in the Ontario junior hockey league for the Buffalo Lighting scoring
thirty-nine points his first season and putting up a whopping thirty-three goals and forty-five assists his second season; over a
point & a half per game. After three seasons at Niagara University, he would go on to play for the Toronto Marlies, Grand
Rapids Griffins and the St. John’s Icecaps in the AHL
Kyle would have one more faithful move to Toledo, Ohio and the ECHL. Playing five seasons for the Walleye, the three-time
top five scorer and three-time Team Captain would eventually become the face of the organization; in 2016 he would be inducted
into the Toledo Hockey Hall of Fame.
Joel Kempter
Metros 1999-03
Joel Kempter waits in front of a wide open Mason City net hoping for what could be the easiest goal of his life. Joel is
shown here during his junior season where he was a stalwart part of the Metros defensive corps. He would record five goals
and five assists this season and add 40 penalty minutes to his Metros stats. However, the best was yet to come next
season. Returning as one of the team leaders, he would don Captain honors and play an integral part in the
championship success this season.
Sammy Schweigert
Metros 2000-03
Sammy Schweigert is in the middle of his three seasons as a Metro player. As a junior he will record eight goals and thirteen
assists, making him the fourth highest Metro scorer. He would eclipse this offense production next season, again cracking the High
Scorers list recording eleven goals and twenty-two assists, fourth highest among Metro scorers and earning team Captain honors.
Kyle Jacobson
Metros 2001-02
Sophomore Kyle Jacobson is the first of three Jacobsons that would play through the SYHA & high school programs
and then progress on to play hockey at the junior and collegian levels. Kyle would be the first; playing for the Metros for
a single season netting thirteen goals and twenty assists ending the regular season as the second highest Metros scorer. After
a single season, he would finish his prep career playing for the Shattuck-St Mary’s program. He would play in the North
American League for three seasons and finish his college career playing hockey for the Iowa Hawkeyes
Did you Know…Both of Kyle’s younger brothers, Derek and Larkin would both go on to play both junior and college hockey.
Both of them for two seasons for the Janesville Jets (NAHL) and then four seasons at the Universities of St. Thomas and Denver.

Finishing in the middle of the regular season pack, the Metros are paired up against their similar in strength and record, the
Des Moines Oak Leafs. The Metros twenty wins and forty points was just two shy of the fourth seeded Oak Leafs. However,
the Metros like their chances having beaten the Leafs in all three meetings this season out-scoring them twelve goals to four;
including a four-nothing shut-out.

This meeting is the fourth this season between the two teams. The Leafs that strike first in this game; they fire just seven shots
on goal; one of them finds the back of the net for a first period lead. However, in the second period Kyle Rogers will tie the
game and Alex Lukehart would get the game-winner for the Metros. Kyle Rogers would grab his second goal of the
game with just under five minutes into the final period. Goaltender Beau Erickson stops all but on of the Leafs
thirty-two shots on goal.
Semi-Final Game
0-Metros vs. Omaha Lancers-1 3OT
March 2nd, 2002
Round two is going to be tough as the Metros meet the regular season champions from Omaha. The Lancers are fresh off
a dominating campaign that saw them lose just a single game all season and finish thirteen points ahead of the runner-up. On
paper this one looks to be all Omaha, but by the time three periods has ended the game remained deadlocked with neither
team able to find the net. It takes nearly another whole game before Omaha scores; sending the Metros to the
consolation game. Goaltender Beau Erickson stops all but one of the forty-six attempts including all
twenty-seven in the opening two periods.

2-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-3
March 3rd, 2002
After that disappointing and draining loss on Saturday to the league’s best team, the Metros look to rebound as they take on
the league’s second best team from Mason City. The Mohawks grab a goal each in the first and second periods giving them
a two score cushion going into the final period. Kyle Jacobson would cut the lead in half, just past the period’s mid-way
point. Jack Brooks would again give the Metros hope with his power play tally, with ninety seconds remaining in the
game. Unfortunately, the Metros can’t muster that much needed tieing goal and contently take the fourth place honors.
Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Junior Varsity Tournament Championship
March 8th-10th / Metro Ice Sports Arena Des Moines, IA
The Metros pair-up with the Omaha Jr. Lancers; just a single point separated them during the regular season with both
teams getting twenty-wins. Both teams have a IHSHL top ten scorer; Metros Alex Lukehart in second and the Lancers
Jacob Braun in ninth place. They also boast the league’s third best goaltender. Both teams would trade goals on Metros
tallies from Steve Babe and Jon Soole. With just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime, Darren Rife
would end the stalemate and send the Metros to the next round.
The Metros would generate just a single goal by Alex Lukehart falling too the regular season champs and eventual
tournament winners the Des Moines Capitols. The Metros would get another chance at Des Moines, this time it’s the
Oak Leafs; having finished just a point ahead of the Metros. Jon Soole and Jack Brooks would keep the game even
and Darin Rife get the game winner with just five minutes left in the game. Winning goaltender Ryan McClennen
stopped all but two of the Oak Leaf’s attempts on net.

Varsity State Tournament held February 28th- March2nd in Waterloo, IA
This is the inaugural season for the MHSHL President’s Senior Academic Award given to players with a 3.5 or grater GPA.
It is also the first season of an All-League Team is presented. It features the League’s top three forwards, two defensemen
and a goalie as voted on by the coaches.
Ames Little Cyclones, Des Moines Capitols, Quad City Patriots, Dubuque Devils, Mason City Mohawks and Waterloo Warriors
Kansas City Jr. Blades, Omaha Gladiators & Jr. Lancers, Sioux City Metros, Des Moines Oak Leafs and the Lincoln Stars
Sioux City would finish the regular season in the middle of the pack. However, when tournament time arrived they were at their peak.
They would score ten times to beat Waterloo and six to beat the Mohawks. The championship game is when the excitement would begin,
it took three overtime periods before sophomore Kevin Lohry scored the game winner over the Des Moines Oak Leafs.
Kevin Lohry would finish among the top ten scorers in the League and Beau Erickson as the second best goaltender in the League.
Four Metros players would make the All-Star Team and three the Chicago Showcase Team. Beau Erickson would take All-League Team
honors between the pipes. Kevin Lohry would be selected as the State Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
JV State Tournament held March 7th-9th in Des Moines, IA
Same as before, the JV put a 15-9-9 record together for a fifth place finish.
Daniel Limoges and Kyle Eyer are among the League’s top ten scorers.

Returning for a second season of coaching stint two, Jimmy Peck and his experienced assistant coach Jeff Gray and
past Metros player Steve Stokes all make good in their quest for another Metros State Title. They do so as one of the
league’s underdogs going into tournament play. Jimmy, Jeff and Steve will serve over the remaining Metros team that
caps-out the Metros’ IHSHL/MHSHL dominance over the last dozen seasons.
Between the Pipes
Sioux City is back again with experience between the pipes with senior Ryan McClennen and junior Beau Erickson. The
Metros will add a sophomore goalie Eric Hoffmeyer to the lineup. However it is the junior who will garner most of the varsity
starts and the season ends with Beau posting a 13-11 record. Ryan and Eric will also add five more wins; giving the Metros a
regular season fifth place finish. The Metros will prevail as the tournament champs when Beau holds the Des Moines Caps
to 3 goals in six periods and sophomore Kevin Lohry scores in the triple Overtime thriller. Beau would also win an IHSHL
Silver Glove Award for his second best save percentage in the league.
Beau Erickson
Metros 2001-04
Building on last season’s success, Beau helps lead the Metros to their third State Championship in the last six seasons.
The junior sees time in twenty-four regular season and finishes with thirteen wins, including two shut-outs against
the Omaha Gladiators and Quad Cities. He also grabs the three necessary wins at the State Tournament.
Beau Erickson has a season to remember…the junior posts his second winning season and he helps lead the Metros to their
third State Championship in the last six seasons. He would receive the IHSHL Silver Glove Award, missing the top spot
by just a few shots on goal. He would be selected to the IHSHL All-Star and All-League Teams as well as the Chicago
Showcase Team. He would also be selected as the Metros Co-Most Valuable Player.
Eric Hoffmeyer Ryan McClennen
Metros 2002-05 Metros 2000-03
Sophomore goaltender Eric Hoffmeyer joins the Metros for his rookie season. He sees time in twenty-three Junior Varsity
contests and grabs eleven wins, including 4 shut-outs and posts a .903 save percentage. Eric would also grab his first
varsity victory this season as well.
Senior Ryan McClennen also shoulders the other half of the JV schedule. Playing in sixteen games, hem records four wins,
four losses and a pair of tie games. He surrenders only seventeen goals all season for a .917 save percentage.

For the first of three seasons in a row Kevin Lohry would lead the Metros in team scoring. The Sophomore would
post a team leading twenty-five goals on his way to forty-six regular season points. Alex Lukehart would make a
second showing on the scorers list with a team leading twenty-eight assists for forty total points. Chase Kinchen and
Sammy Schweigert would both record eleven goals with Chase posting twenty-four assists and Sammy twenty-two.
Rounding out the top five is Jack Brooks with eight goals and seven assists.

thirty-one penalty minutes.

Aaron Limoges: This Championship season was a terrific end to Aaron’s three seasons a s a Metro. He would be chosen as one
of the Metros Team Captains. He played a terrific physical game and was one of the Metros top penalty leaders both his junior and
senior seasons. He would be selected to the 2003 IHSHL All-Star and the Chicago Showcase teams. In 2003 he also was the
recipient of the SYHA/Metros Dustin White Award.
Did You Know...Aaron assisted on the Metros championship winning goal in the 6th overtime to beat the Des Moines Oak Leafs 5-4
Brett Swanson: He would take over where his brother (Brian) left-off. Always a team leader and a guy who came to the rink every
game to play. However, the fun of playing a kid’s game was never lost on him. He was one of the few guys who who really loved the
game and had fun doing it. This enjoyment and knowledge of the game transferred well to his many years as a USA Hockey official
where right out of high school be joined the IHSHL referee staff.

Brothers Jeff & Joel Kempter can both boast IHSHL/HSHL Championship success. Jeff was a member if the back-to-back
Tournament Champions in 1998 & 1999. Joel was a member of the underdog Metros 2003 triple-overtime Championship victory.
Jeff would record sixty-eight regular season points and was the Metros second leading scorer during his junior season. Several
times he had to be reminded that the “C” he wore should stand for courtesy not confrontation!!! Joel led the Metros defensive
corps for three seasons, as a sophomore he was the JV Most Valuable Player, as a junior the Varsity’s Most Improved
Player and a a senior the Metros Team Captain. He would eventually help lead the team to their sixth IHSHL/MHSHL
Tournament Championship. Both would have lengthy stints at the local block factory before moving on to other careers.

The Metros are in for a challenge as they square-off against the Waterloo Warriors. The opening day would pit both of the
League’s middle ranked teams against each other. Fourth seeded Waterloo would finish the season with three more wins
than the Metros, but four overtime losses kept the point race close with the Metros finishing with 40 points, two shy of
the Warriors. The game looks to be a good one…and it does not disappoint
The tournament hosts jumped all over the Metros scoring two goals in the first three minutes, however Aaron Limoges
and Kevin Lohry would keep the game close with the Warriors on top after the first period 3-2.
The second period brought on a furry of red-lighters with Waterloo scoring first and upping the lead to 4-2. However, Sioux
City wasn’t going that easy and they answer back with three straight goals, one form Alex Lukehart and a pair from Cody

Lukehart lets the air out of the Warriors tires, giving Sioux City a 10-7 opening round victory.
The Beginning & End of a 17 Goal Slugfest
Several of the usual starters (Alex Lukehart, Joel Kempter, Aaron Limoges, Kevin Lohry & Sammy Schweigert)
take their spot as the games starting line-ups are announced for this semi-final championship tilt against the Waterloo
Warriors. This would turn into an offensive battle that would see the Metros hang on to win 10-7. They would advance
on to play the Mason City Mohawks.
Kevin Lohry records four goals and two assists, Alex Lukehart gets a pair of goals and assists, Sammy Schweigert,
Aaron Limoges, Daniel Limoges & Chase Kitchen all have multi-point outings. Beau Erickson stops 23 shots on goal
and the Metros advance to the Semi-finals.
Semi-Final Game
6-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-4
March 1st
The Metros meet up in the second round with regular season champions and tournament favorites from Masson City. Having
dominated the league this season, the Mohawks lost just a single game in regulation and finishing with thirty-three victories.
However, the tournament favorites are seriously challenge right off by Lincoln and it takes the Mohawks an extra period to
dispatch the last place Stars.
The Tournament favorites quickly jump all over the Metros; giving up a goal just 26 seconds into the period and then a couple
minutes later putting the Mohawks up by two. Sammy Schweigert and Kevin Lohry will help the Metros climb back in the
game and after the first period the Metros are back in it – but down 3-2.
The Mohawks strike first again, scoring before the first minute of the period passed. Kevin Lohry would retaliate minutes
later keeping it a one goal game. After trading goals at the beginning of the period, both teams battle back and fourth the
remainder of the period and the second ends with the Metros still behind 4-3.
This period its the Metros who score first, catching the Mohawks flat-footed Kevin Lohry lights the lamp five minutes
into the period; tieing the game at four goals apiece. Two Minutes last Jack Brooks gives the Metros the lead and
puts the pressure on the Mohawks with just a half of period to go. Beau Erickson will stop a barrage of last period
shots by Mason City and with just over a minute remaining Chase Kitchen buries a Joel Kempter pass into the
empty net securing the lead and a trip to the finals.

Championship Game
5-Metros vs. Des Monies Oak Leafs-4 3OT
March 2nd
This season’s championship features two sleeper teams; the fifth seeded Metros and the Des Moines Oak Leafs. Both teams
are fresh of top seed upsets with the Metros beating Mason City and the ‘Leafs defeating cross-town rivals the Capitols.
For the third game in a row, the Metros spot their opponents a two goal lead and the Leafs end the first period up by two.
The second period begins with the Metros surprising the Leafs with a pair of quick pair goals from Alex Lukehart and Chase
Kitchen and suddenly the game is tied. Sioux City continues the attack with a go-ahead-goal from Sammy Schweigert. The
Leafs counter with another goal of their own, but a minute later Daniel Limoges puts the Metros back on top as the
second period ends.
The remaining periods are a flurry of fast breaks, great shots and terrific saves as the League’s two hottest goalies do battle.
With the exception of a tieing Oak Leaf goal seven & a half minutes into the third period, both goalies will remain flawless for
nearly 48 minutes. With the third overtime period just :29 seconds old, Sioux City’s Kevin Lohry tips in an Aaron Limoges
shot on goal and the Metros are the 2003 IHSHL Champions.
The Thriller in the ‘Loo
Championship Game Metros vs. Des Moines Oak Leafs
The Metros break from their pre-game huddle and get ready to take on the Des Moines Oak Leafs. This one would prove tougher
than the last two games in which the Metros easily handled their opponents. This one would go the distance and more…it would take
three over time periods before sophomore Kevin Lohry would redirect a pass from Aaron Limoges and ice it for the Metros.
Goaltender Beau Erickson would see plenty of action in this game, eventually stopping thirty-five shots on goal. He also
knows that his defensive corps of Brett Swanson, Joel Kempter, Kyle Bennett, Bobby Murphy and others were
always there to help out.

Kevin Lohry scores :26 seconds into the third overtime period as the Metros defeat the Des Moines Oak Leafs. His game winner
gives him eight goals & four assists over the three game weekend he averages four points per game. He is selected as the IHSHL
Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Organized buy past SYHA player Chad Sheehan and member of the Sioux City Police Officer’s Association. This
contest featured Sioux City Public Safety officers, Musketeer Alumni and past SYHA players and benefited the
Sioux City Make-A Wish Foundation and Siouxland Youth Hockey Association. In addition to the game, the event
also hosted an NHL Style Skills competition by the Sioux City Musketeers.

Varsity State Tournament held February 27th- 29th in Des Moines, IA.

The Metros compile a 20-8-1-1 record for a fourth place finish. Only 10 points separate the top five teams in the league this season. Kevin
Lohry and Alex Lukehart show among the top ten scorers in the league. Goaltender Beau Erickson would make a habit of being the second
best goaltender in the league. Five players earn All-Star game awards, four All-State awards and Lohry and Erickson make the All-
League Team.
With a victory over Ames sandwiched between a pair of losses at the State Tournament, the Metros would finish in 6th place.

The JV would complete the season with a 13-11-6 record and a sixth place finish.

Back for a third season are Head Coach Jimmy Peck and Assistant Coach Jeff Gray. Former SYHA & Metros player
Dirk Richou takes on the JV Head Coaching duties this season. Dirk Played three seasons for the Metros; twice he was a
Metros Heavy Hitter-leading the team if final season and a two-time IHSHL All-Star. He was active in the SYHA coaching
program prior to joining the Metros staff. Taking on the administrative duties this season is veteren Team Rep Kirk
Lukehart and rookie Team Manager Duane Hoffmeyer.
Between the Pipes
Beau Erickson retunes for his final season; junior Eric Hoffmeyer and sophomore Adam Suing joins him as they
defend their IHSHL Championship. Beau takes on most of the starts and finishes with a 12-7-1 record, however Eric and
Adam combine for eight more wins, as the Metros grab the fourth place regular season finish with a 20-8-1 record.
Beau Erickson
Metros 2001-04
Beau is back for his third season with the Metros, and he looks to build on his multiple successes from last season’s IHSHL
Championship and post-season League honors.
The senior goaltender would again carry the varsity mail for the Metros. Beau Erickson would see time in twenty varsity
games; recording a dozen wins, including shut-outs against Lincoln and two in a row against Dubuque. He would receive
his second IHSHL Silver Glove Award posting a League leading.923 save percentage. Beau would also be selected for a
second time to the IHSHL All-League and All-Star Teams. He would also earn a spot in the Chicago Showcase
playing on Team Midwest.
Eric Hoffmeyer Adam Suing
Metros 2002-05 Metros 2002-06
Eric and Adam both share the varsity season back-up duties; each seeing time in five games. They would both split the
junior varsity starter position again both seeing time in fourteen games.
Returning for his third season is Eric Hoffmeyer. The junior net minder would see time in five varsity games; grabbing
four victories along the way. He would split the JV duties playing in fourteen contests and posting four wins, six losses
and four tie games. Eric would again receive the IHSHL Academic Achievement Award this season.
Youngster Adam Suing records an ample amount of time as a rookie. He grabs five varsity starts and wins four of them.
Surrendering just a dozen goals on a 158 shots, he boasts an awesome .924 save percentage. He would also share the JV
starting duties, playing in fourteen contests; winning eight games, losing four and a pair of stalemates. Adan would receive
his first IHSHL Academic Achievement Award this season.

Kevin Lohry is again the Metros top scorer with a team leading twenty-four goals for a season high of fifty-six points.
Alex Lukehart also returns to the list with a team high thirty-two assists for fifty-three total points. Scott Marsh records
sixteen goals for thirty-two points. Ben Kambach and Kyle Bennett both make their first of two showings on the scorers
list with Ben’s eight goals and dozen assists and Kyle’s five goals and eight assists.

Eddie Navarette SYHA Ted Neby Award
Metros 2001-04
Senior Metro player Eddie Navarette receives the 2004 SYHA Ted Neby Award from SYHA President Maxine Buckmeier. Eddie
would play for the Metros for three seasons and was part of the 2003 IHSHL Championship team. He was always to hard worker and
always gave the green and gold 110 percent. As a Senior he would play a game shy of a complete junior Varsity schedule leading the
Metros in scoring with a dozen goals and ten assists. He would also make the varsity squad seeing time in several varsity games.
Stanley Cup Comes to Sioux City

sports most historic championship trophy. Jim presents Ruslan with a big Thank You for making this exciting moment possible.

Did You Know…this would be the first time ever that the Stanley Cup was in the state of Iowa.
Ruslan signs autographs and take photos until everyone was satisfied. The cup arrived in Sioux City three hours late due to a
delayed flight from Denver, where, ironically, another Musketeer John Grahame has spent his day with the cup.
Did You Know...That’s future Metro player Brandon Swanson in the teal shirt getting Ruslan’s autograph. Brandon
would play three seasons (2013-16) for the Metros. Brandon’s dad, Kirk, was also a Metro (1982-85) as well as a long-
time USA Hockey and USHL official.

Alex Lukehart played three seasons for the Metros and was a three-time Metros High Scorer recording thirty-five goals
& eighty assists for 115 regular season points. He was a three time IHSHL Academic Athlete and a two time IHSHL
All-Star. Alex was an Alternant Captain on the 2003 IHSHL State Championship team and the Metros Team Captain the
following season. His sophomore season he was the JV Most Valuable Player and his senior season the Metros varsity
Most Valuable Player as well as a member of the IHSHL All-League team.
Kirk Lukehart was the Metros Team Rep for for three seasons. He was also a longtime SYHA Board member and Midwest
League reprehensive. He was instrumental in the promotion, funding and completion of the the new IBP Ice Center in 1997.
Did You Know…In 2018 Kurt would again put his fund raising prowess to work, heading up the fund-raising duties featuring
an addition to the IBP Ice Center. This included expanded locker room facilities for the Varsity & JV high school teams,
a separate girl’s locker area, an expanded open lobby/concession stand common area, additional storage and meeting rooms.
This project would eventually have life, starting in 2022 and being completed for the 2024-25 hockey season.

Defenseman Brett Swanson rounded out the five Metros selected to play in the game. Still need score details.
Senior Brent Swanson holds the IHSHL record for two consecutive seasons for both single game and total career hit linesmen/referees.
There is an asterisk to this record; lots of them weren’t accidents.
Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Tournament Championship

The defending State Champs enter the tournament this season as the fourth best team during the regular season as one of five teams
with twenty or more wins. The Des Moines Capitols and the Omaha Jr. Lancers tie for first with twenty-five wins and just
five losses. Mason City is just behind with twenty-two wins.
Quarter-Final Game
2-Metros vs. Des Moines Oak Leafs-5
February 27th, 2004
The Metros pair up with the fifth seeded Oak Leafs. The Metros did win two of the three meeting this season, with two ties being
the difference between fourth and fifth place. In what is though to be a battle between the league’s top five high scores in Brian
Spring from Des Moines and Metros Kevin Lohry and Alex Lukehart. Instead, it’s a battle between the the Leafs goaltender
Tim Thomas and this season’s IHSHL Silver Glove winner and two-time All-Star & First Team All-Leaguer Beau Erickson.
In the first of two, opening round up-sets, the Des Moines Oak Leafs stun the defending champions with a single goal victory.
The League’s best goaltender Beau Erickson stops all but one of the Leafs thirty-eight shots on goal, however, despite
forty-seven attempts, the Metros can’t light the light. They couldn’t cash-in on a pair of Leaf penalties in the second
just didn’t have the jump needed to get that equalizing goal. There will be no repeat championship this season.
Semi-Final Game
7-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-4
February 28th, 2004
Kevin Lohry would grab a Hat Trick in this second round win over the final seeded Ames Lil’ Cyclones. The Metros
would build a five goal lead, including Kevin’s three and one by Alex Lukehart and Chaz Berglin before Ames could
even get on the board in the second. Alex would add a second goal in the third as well as red-lighters by Brett Swanson
and Chase Peterson put the game away for the Metros. Winning goaltender Goaltender Adam Suing would stop
fourteen shots on goal.
Fifth Place Game
2-Metros vs. Omaha Jr. Lancers-6
February 29th, 2004
This final game of the season was not pretty; for the second time in three days, the usually high powered offence faltered,
and could manage just two total goals. Chase Peterson and Alex Lukehart added first and second period tallies
keeping the game within two. However, two more third period Jr. Lancer red-lighters and just six
unsuccessful shots on goal spells sixth place finish for the Metros.

March 5th-7th / Canlan Ice Sports Kansas City, KS
The sixth seeded junior varsity opens the tournament against the league’s third best team in the Mason City Mohawks and fail to
find the back of the net. They do rebound in Saturday’s games getting goals from Eddie Navarrete and Brett Roberts. Sunday’s
games start on time, but game two pushes everything back, as the Metros and the Quad City Blues take four overtime periods
to find a winner. David Hansen would burie a Ryan Guthridge pass, ending the stalemate five minutes and forty-four
seconds into the fourth overtime.

The coaching staff is pared down a bit this season. Head Coach Jimmy Peck is back for a fourth season and
Jeff Gray will serve as the Varsity Assistant Coach and take over again as the JV Head Coach. Both Jimmy and
Jeff were former Musketeers players and served as head coach and assistant coach for the Metros 1994 and 2003 IHSHL high
school championship teams. Duane Hoffmeyer returns for a second season, taking on double duty as both
the Team Rep and Team Mananger.
Between the Pipes
The Metros start the season with a pair of experienced goaltenders, senior Eric Hoffmeyer and junior Adam Suing make for a reliable
duo in the net and rotate on a regular schedule. Eric will finish the season with a 8-3-1 record and Adam a 8-10. This duo would shut-out
their opponents seven times this season on the way to a fifth place regular season finish.

Senior Eric Hoffmeyer would work a winning 8-3-1 season, grab a pair of shut-outs against Ames and Kansas City and
record a .867 save percentage. Eric would also receive the IHSHL President’s Senior Academic Award.

Junior Adam Suing would log a few more games this season and finish with a 8-10 record, including five shut-outs and
post a .893 save percentage. He would also receive the IHSHL Academic Achievement Award this season.

Kevin Lohry does it again, as he leads the Metros in scoring three seasons in a row; with a team leading twenty-six goals
on his way to forty-two regular season points. Retuning to the list are more familiar name from last season; Ben Kambach
would score eleven goals for thirty points, Scott Marsh a point behind but with a team high of twenty assists, Chaz Berglin
also with eleven goals and a dozen assists and Kyle Bennett capping the top scorers list with seven goals and ten assists.

Newcomer to the heavy hitter list is Junior Nick Bauer, he leads the Metros with an hour in the box. However,
returning for a second season is senior Ben Held who is on his heals by a pair of minors with fifty-six minutes. There
are a few Metros top scores on the list this season; junior Kyle Bennett finishes with fifty-one minutes, also back for a
second season is senior Ben Kambach recording fifty minutes and another senior Scott Marsh with forty-two minutes.

Everyone in this picture, is interested where Senior Captain Kevin Lohry is headed as he takes control of the puck.
Kevin will go on to be the most “decorated” Sioux City Metro player in its history.
After winning multiple Team scoring titles and a State Championship, he would also be one of the League’s leading scorers
boasting several All-Star, All-State and Chicago Showcase Team selections. As a freshman, he broke the tie in the third
overtime to give Sioux City their first IHSHL Championship of the new millennium and was selected the Tournament’s
Most Valuable Player. Kevin would twice win the IHSHL Academic Achievement Award and this season the IHSHL
President’s Senior Academic Award. He would go on to play four seasons for the Princeton Tigers and spend a season in
the ECHL playing for the Bakersfield Condors.
Kevin Lohry becomes only the third Metro player to lead the team in scoring for three consecutive seasons. He never missed a
game; playing in ninety-three regular season varsity games, he notched 75 goals and 69 assists. During his junior season he
averaged nearly two points per game, and finished with a point & a half overall average per game.
Kevin Lohry becomes only the second Metro player to be selected three times to represent Team Midwest in the prestigious
Chicago Showcase tournament. Held Annually; this nation-wide tournament features the best high school players from across the
country. This record was also held by Daniel Davies who was a member of the 91, 92 and 93 Tri-State teams.
Kevin Lohry is only the second Metro player to share these three distinct honors; three-time selection to both the IHSHL All-Star
and and IHSHL All-League teams as well as a three-time IHSHL League top ten scorer. This record was also held by Daniel
Davies who earned similiar honors diring the 1991,92 and 92 seasons.

3-Metros vs. Omaha Jr. Lancers-2
March 4th, 2005
The Metros opening round foe are the fourth seeded Omaha Jr. Lancers. The team met three times during the season, with
Omaha coming alway with two one goal victories the Metros win was a three nothng blanking of the Lancers. After a scoreless
first period, the teams would trade goals in the second including a game tieing tally by Ben Kambach. Sioux City would grab
the first two goals of the third period on red-lighters from Kyle Bennett and Tyler Hanson. Goaltender Adam Suing
would stiffel the Lancers rally, stopping all but one of the period’s eight shots on goal.

2-Metros vs. Des Moines Capitols-3
March 5th, 2005
This second round game finds the Metros facing the regular season champions and, eventual tournament winners in the Des Moines
Capitols. Sioux City would stun the favorites on a Ben Kambach goal that gave the Metros a first period lead. Kevin Lohry would put
the Metros up by two on his late in the period red-lighter. The Caps would rebound though, grabbing their first goal with just forty-five
seconds left in the second period. A dormant offence and two unanswered goals spell consolation game for the Metros.

2-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-3
March 6th, 2005
This third place contest sees the Metros taking-on the second best team in the league the Mason City Mohawks. Sioux City would
fall behind until a pair of second period goals from Kyle Bennett and Kevin Lohry put the Metros back in the game. Unfortunately,
it would be the Mohawks who find the winning goal sending Sioux City home with the fourth place trophy. Goaltender Eric Hoffmeyer
would stop all but three of the thirty-five Mason City shots on goal.

Jimmy Peck enters his tenth overall season coaching the Metros, boasting a regular season championship and a pair of
State Tournament wins thus far. Lending a hand are experienced youth and high school coach Dave LeGree. He served
as Metros head coach a three seasons in the early eighties and during the 90-91 season when the Metros captured their
first State Tournament Championship. Dave would go on to further coaching success eventually brining another State
Tournament Championship and a National Championship to Sioux City. Past Metros players Seth Schramm and
Dan Cownie join the coaching staff as well. Seth was an IHSHL All-State selection and a member of the Chicago
Showcase team. Dan will share the Team Rep and Team manager Duties with Dan Rose.
Between the Pipes
Even after losing their two starting goalies the prior season the Metros are still have experience between the pipes in senior Adam Suing.
Battling for the second position are sophomore Josh Sachnoff and freshman Justin Decker. Adam would shoulder the load this season
seeing time in all but two games and finishing the regular season with a 13-18 record. Josh Sachnoff will see time in the varsity net as well;
posting a 1-1 record. Josh and Justin will rotate evenly for the junior varsity finishing the season with records of 5-8-5 and 6-8-1.

Johnny Adam played there seasons a a Metro. Shown here as a junior, he lit the lamp six times and helped on eight other goals but
his biggest contribution was that of leadership. He came to play every game & used his size and strength to open up the ice for his
team mates. The following season as a senior, he would score eight goals and add sixteen assists and finish as a Metros top three
scorer. Most notably would be his 114 penalty minutes, a Metros record that stood for exactly one season. Johnny would go on to
play football four seasons in the GPAC for the Northwestern College Red Raiders
Did You know…John is the son of legendary Jr. Musketeer/Metro player Mark Adam; this guy’s prowess in the paint and
around the slot is what legends are made of. There was rarely a shot that he couldn’t tip or deflect for a Metro goal.

Sioux City alumni players Pauly Koskovich and Bob Batcheller have traded in their sticks for finger whistles. Both
guys would go on to work at the USHL level where they were members of USA Hockey Officials Development Program.
Pauly would forgo his senior season as a player and start his journey to USHL official. Twenty seasons prior to that, Bob
would return after college and begin his quest to work at the USHL level.

Pairing up with the regular season champs and eventual three time consecutive tournament champions the Des Moines Oak
Leafs. The high scoring Leafs jump out to a three goal lead before B.J. Jackson puts the Metros on the board and in the
game. However, the remaining periods are all Oak Leafs hanging five more goals on the Metros; two in the seconds and
three in the third.

The Metros look to rebound after yesterday’s loss and feel optimistic matching-up with the Quad City. The Blues did manage
five additional wins than the Metros but are fresh off a convincing opening round up-set loss. John Adam grabs the first period’s
only tally and the Blues answer back in the second. John Adam finds the net for the second time just over two minutes into the
period taking the lead and the momentum. However, the wheels are about to come off….the Metros surrender four unanswered
goals and the Blues easily cruised to a second round victory.
Seventh Place Game
5-Metros vs. Waterloo Warriors-4 OT
February 24th, 2006
This match-up between the leagues two least productive regular season teams is also a battle for a face-saving seventh place finish
among the eight participating teams. Waterloo would strike first but goals from Marshall Tuttle and Ben Schmidt would put
the Metros on top after one. The Warriors would counter in the second with two goals themselves, but a Nick Bauer red-
lighter would again tie the game. The teams would trade goals in the third including Chad Corbett‘s game tieing goal with
just under three minutes remaining. Wasting no time in the overtime…Metro Tyler Hanson would beat the Warriors net
minder just forty-one seconds in to the extra period.

Sioux City grabs the seventh spot during the regular season with eleven wins. Both of the Des Moines teams, Capitols and

teams earning over twenty-two wins. An up-set and an almost up-set of the two top teams doesn’t compare to the
excitement of the tournaments fifth game.

Bryce Buchmann Bags 3 Short-Handed Goals in 18 Seconds
Lincoln’s Bryce Buchmann scored four goals in a row, three of them short handed, in a span of 18 seconds during the fifth game
of Saturday’s 2006 Jr. Varsity Tournament.
Fifth seeded Quad City held a commanding 5-0 lead over the host team. At 5:32 of the second period, Lincoln’s Robby Bieber
is whistled for a penalty. Bryce would begin his scoring spree eight seconds later, notching three short-handed goals in 18 seconds.
His fourth red-lighter coming at 9:49 of the same period. Stephen Magnuson assisted on all of Buchmann’s goals. The Jr. Stars
would tie the game at 11:13 of the second period, on a goal by Drew Eirich. The game-winning goal would came when
Lincoln’s Justin Ley buried a shot with one second left in the contest.

to better affiliate the member teams from, not only Iowa, but Missouri, Nebraska & South Dakota.

Head Coach Jimmy Peck commences on his eleventh and final season, for now, as Metros Head Coach and by the time
the season ends he can boast the Metros winning tradition; eight winning seasons, a regular season championship, a pair
of State Tournament victories, West Division All-Star Game coach selection and a IHSHL Coach of the Year Award.
Jeff Gray is also in his final season playing a part in the team’s winning tradition; being apart of both a Varsity and Junior
Varsity Regular Season and State Championship teams. Another past Metros player Steve Stokes joins the staff working
with both the varsity and junior varsity teams. Dan Rose stays on a second season working both the Team Rep and
Manager position.

Senior goalie Donovan Convay returns to the Metros lineup after a season in Omaha. He will share the goalie duties this
season freshmen Lee Noel and junior Josh Sachnoff. However, Donovan will carry the mail for the Metros seeing time in 25
games; posting nine wins & fourteen losses. Josh would post a 4-4 and Lee a 1-1 varsity records. Their 14-19 overall record is
not enough to secure a spot in the League Tournament. Josh, Lee and Sophomore Justin Decker all split time & gain
experience during the junior varsity season.

single season University of Michigan before moving to the NHL where he played ten season for the Canadians and is currently
playing for the Golden Knights, Blake a three season Musketeer veteran would play for the UNO Mavericks and Dustin play
four seasons for Michigan State, eight seasons in the ECHL/AHL and is currently playing in the Germany Elite League.
Drake and Max Beller would both go on to be Sioux City Metro stand-out players in the Midwest High School Hockey League.
During the 2017-18 season Drake would lead the league in scoring with sixty-nine points in just twenty-eight games. He would be
a three-time Metros top five scorer and a two-time All-Star and All- League player. Max is currently playing for the Metros where
his is a second-time Metros top scorer and potential League All-Star.
Both players would help lead the Sioux City Metros to the Midwest Leagues triple crown title bringing home the regular season and
tournament championships as well as USA Hockey’s 2018 National Championship.
Marshall Tuttle surpasses the record for Most Career Games Played by Metros player with 118 regular season games.
He would miss just five regular season games, two as a junior and three as a senior, during four seasons of IHSHL play.

For the first time since the league began began, the Metros failed to qualify for the post season tournament. Boasting six tournament
championships, four second, three third and a pair of fourth place finishes over the past twenty seasons the Metros are about to
hit a serious skid.

The Metros 13-20-1-2 record is good enough for the final tournament spot. Three players will make the All-Star game and two players the
Chicago Showcase.
JV State Tournament held on March 7th-9th in Ames Iowa.
The JV falls a three points short of the final tournament spot with a 10-23-3 record.
Dr. Steven Noel Memorial
In 2007 Siouxland Youth Hockey lost a terrific supporter of youth hockey and just an all round terrific guy!!! At the time, Steve and
his wife had three youth hockey players in the program. The Metros honored Steve by wearing the below helmet stickers for the
remaining two years of their oldest son’s high school seasons.
The hope of the Stephen H. Noel Memorial Fund is to commemorate these qualities of Steve by inspiring and assisting
young people to pursue a career in medicine.

Taking on the Head Coaching duties this season are Corey Clarks. Originally from Minnesota, he joins the Metros
with several seasons coaching experience at both the youth and high school levels. He also takes on the new
responsibilities of the newly created SYHA Director of Coaching and Player Development. Andrew Morse will be his
team as Assistant Coach. Also from the Land of a Ten-thousand Lakes and One fish, he arrives with coaching experience.
Brian Thiele starts his run as team Manager and Dan Rose continues as the Metros Team Rep.
Between the Pipes
The Metros enter another season with a five-man menu of available goaltenders, however, it is youth that wins out and
sophomore Lee Noel rises to the top and secures the starting position. Fellow sophomore Tyler Brinkerhoff secures the
back-up duties. Unfortunately, the Iowa League’s firepower proves to much for the young goalies and the Metros finish the
season with a 13-20-3 record grabbing the eighth and final play-off spot. All five of the Metros goalies spend time in the
junior varsity net with Alex Wankum logging the most time with a 5-12 record and Justin Decker finishing with
a 2-8-1 record. Senior Josh Sachnoff would also log some time between the junior varsity pipes.
Lee Noel
Metros 2007-10
Lee Noel would assume the starting goaltender duties this sophomore season. While the net minder corps is very strong
this season, he would be the go-to guy for the Metros this season. Lee would record a pair of shut-outs and a respectable
GAA of 3.03. Playing in twenty-two games he would finish with a 10-10 record but still steer the Metros into the
final tournament slot. He is also a three-season recipient of the MHSHL Academic Achievement Award.

Returning again to the scorers list are Andrew Bauer who leads the team with forty-five points including a team high of
twenty-six assists. B.J. Jackson tallies a team leading twenty-one red-lighters for forty-one points. Jacob Wilde also scores
forty-one points, including both a team high of twenty-six assists and three game-winning goals. Ryan Thorsland scores
fourteen goals and eight assists and Kyle Lierman rounds out the top five with six goals and ten assists.

The Metros penalty minute record falls quickly – as Jacob Wild sets the bar to an unachievable height of 140
penalty minutes. Keep in mind, he was also a top three scorer with forty-one points. Seth Pinney was a distant
second, but still with a very respectable eighty-nine minutes. Pat Hauswith finished with fifty-four minutes and
Justin Thiele & leading scorer Andrew Bauer both recorded forty-six minutes in the box.

He Shoots…He Scores!!! Senior Colt Ludwig put the biscuit in the basket, scoring in this win over the Cedar Rapids
Jr. Roughriders. This was just one of his five goals, three assists and eight points this season for the Metros. He would also
record a game-winner and eighteen penalty minutes. He would also play in five junior varsity games scoring three goals.

Metros leading scorer Andrew Bauer shown here during the January 26th tilt taking on the Cedar Rapids Jr. Roughriders. Andrew
would record 19 goals and 26 assists this season but also lead the Metros in more ways than scoring points. Always the team leader he
did so by example, earning Alternate Captain duties both his junior and senior seasons. The physical play of the game was his strong suit
and was never afraid to play the body, making him one of the top five penalty guys each of his three seasons. He would secure a pair of
IHSHL All-Star game selection in 2007 and 2008 as well as a pair of selections to the Chicago Showcase playing for Team Midwest.

Seth Pinney would log three seasons as a Metros player. His first two season were spilt between JV and Varsity. Due to
an injury Seth missed his junior season, but returned for his senior year where he recorded a pair of goals and four helpers.
Did You Know…Seth’s dad, Pat was also a Metro player for four seasons (1978-81) and a member of the ’80 & ’81 teams
that made back to back third place showings at the State Tournament.
Zach Hagaman would play for the Metros three seasons. His sophomore season saw him break into to varsity
roster playing nearly a full schedule of varsity games scoring a pair of goals and four assists. He would also be a top
five Metro JV scorer with four goals and a dozen assists. He would finish his last two season as a varsity player where
he would record six goals & thirteen assists.

The Metros wallow at the button of the MHSHL for much of the season. However, they catch fire; winning nine of their remaining
ten games and grabbing the eighth and final tournament slot. The Des Moines Oak leafs win the regular season; losing just a pair
of regulation games this season and they are definitely the tournament favorites.

Finishing in eighth place has its consequences and its usually having to play the league champions. Just under two minutes into
the game, Ryan Thorsland stuns the favorites, when he beats the Leafs goaltender on assists from Justin Thiele and
Kyle Lierman. The tournament’s first up-set in on…not!!! Des Moines proceeds to score the next ten unanswered
goals; four in the first, two in the second and four more in the third.
Semi-Final Game
4-Metros vs. Des Moines Capitols-3 2 SO
March 1st, 2008
Drawing another Des Moines team, this time it the equally dangerous Capitols. Sioux City grabs a goal in each period on tallies
by Jacob Wilde, Ryan Thorsland and B.J. Jackson. Goaltender Lee Noel stops twenty-two of the Capitols attempted shots.
The game remains ties after three periods and heads to a shoot-out. As the ninth shooter, Zach Hagaman finds the back of the
net giving the Metros a much needed win.
Fifth Place Game
0-Metros vs. Mason City-5
March 2nd, 2008
The Metros third foe of the weekend is Mason City. Finishing just ahead of the Metros during the regular season, the Mohawks
amassed seven more wins this season than the Metros. In a game that could go either way on paper…didn’t. The Mohawks
would record five unanswered goals on the weary Metros, handing them a sixth place finish; their best tournament
finish in the last three seasons.

The Metros struggle this season and can only muster 13 wins in the 32 game season. They miss the tournament for the
second time in three seasons. Kyle Lierman earns All-Star game honors and plays in the Chicago Showcase.
JV State Tournament held March 6th-8th in Ames, IA (Ames/ISU Ice Arena)
JV grabs the seventh spot with a 14-12-6 record. Eric Flynn, Cody Nelson and Benny Holzrichter finish among
the top ten scorers in the League.
* This is the first season that the post-season tournaments for both Varsity and JV are centralized in Ames, IA.

Corey Clarks begins his second season as the Metros Head Coach. Joining him this season Brant and Corey Mozak.
The two brothers are past SYHA and Metros players and will be taking on the Assistant Coaching duties this season.
Brant played two seasons with the Metros and won a pair of IHSHL Championships, before moving to Colorado where
he finished his remaining two high school seasons with the Pike’s Peak Miners AAA team. Cory logged a pair of seasons
with the Metros before joining the Miners team as well. After graduation he would play three seasons in the NAHL and
two more at college before returning to Sioux City. Mark Vos would join the staff this season as the team manager
and Brian Thiele would continue as Team Rep.
Between the Pipes
Juniors Lee Noel and Tyler Brinkerhoff start the season with two prior years of high school experience. Senior Justin Decker
and Sophomore Garrett VanBuskirk add the the Metros goaltending depth. Lee will take the starts for most this season; finishing
with an 8-16-2 record. Tyler will record a pair of wins and a loss, as well as Justin, Alex and Garrett also recording a varsity
victory. However, this experienced corps could only come together for 13 wins, 18 losses and a tine game, not enough to make
the tournament. Justin, Alex, Garrett & Tyler however, would all combined for a winning junior varsity season of 14-12-6
securing a seventh place regular season finish.

Colton Kramer joins a short list of Freshman players who have lead the Metros in scoring. He would lead the
team with thirty-six points including both a team leading nineteen goals and five game winning tallies. No stranger
to the top five list is senior Kyle Lierman with a team leading eighteen assists and thirty-five points. Sophmore
Taylor White would record fifteen goals and a dozen assists and seniors Justin Thiele notches eleven goals and
adds fourteen assists and Cody Nelson rounds out the top five scorers this season with eight goals and fifteen assists.

Kyle Lierman makes both lists this season as he records a team leading 107 penalty minutes. A distant second is
sophmore Desmond Harsma with eighty-two minutes. Top five scorer Justin Thiele and Junior Adam Bornholtz
both record forty-eight minutes. Sophmore Mitch Vos and his forty-six minutes place him on the list for the first
time, but not the last.
Did You Know…Kyle Lierman and Colton Kramer both lead the Metros this season with a six game scoring streak-
posting eleven and ten points.

The Metros record just thirteen wins this season finishing eleven points short of the final tournament position. This is the second season in
the last three that the Metros have missed the tournament and an unforeseeable downward trend is headed the Metros way.
Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Junior Varsity Tournament Championship
March 6th-8th / Ames, IA
The Metros fall short in a tournament opening double overtime game. Eric Flynn and Cody Nelson tally but the Metros can’t find that
needed tieing goal. Eric Flynn would grab two more goals and Cody Nelson another, but for the second day in a row the Metros come
up a goal short. Ben Holzrichter records a pair of red-lighters and Cody Nelson gets his third goal in three games, this time giving the
Metros a season ending victory.

The JV have an awful season managing to muster just 6 wins added to 24 losses and a pair of ties.

Brant Mozak takes over the Head Coaching position this season. He is a past SYHA and Metros players with championship
experience, having played on the 998 and 99 Championship teams. He would also play at the AAA level for several
seasons before returning home to Sioux City. Corey Mozak and Steve Kramer both remain on as Assistant Coaches.
Corey is also a past SYHA & Metros player and brings with him several seasons of AAA and Junior hockey experience.
Former Musketeer player and veteran Metros assistant coach Jeff Gray also lends some time to the coaching staff
this season. Mark Vos will assume both the Team Rep and Team Manager duties.

Sophomore Colton Kramer tops the Metros in scoring for a second consecutive season with a team leading forty-two goals.
His sixty-eight total points also places him among the top three MHSHL scorers. Senior Eric Flynn is second with a team
high thirty-three assists good for fifty points. Mitch Vos becomes a regular on both top five lists with eighteen assists for
twenty-two points. With a seemingly endless supply of Bauers in the program, it’s senior Nate Bauer this time cracking the
scorers list with nine goals and a dozen assists. Another senior this season is Adam Bornholtz rounds out the top five
Metros scorers with ten goals and seven assists.
Heavy Hitters

Juniors Desmond Harsma makes a second return to the hitter list this season, leading the Metros with seventy-five penalty
minutes and Taylor White is a few minors behind him with sixty-nine minutes. Leading scorer Colton Kramer makes
both lists this season recording sixty minutes in the box. Two other top scorers also make the list this season; senior Nate Bauer
with fifty-four minutes and Junior Mitch Vos with forty-eightpenalty minutes.

seasons off from hockey!!!

as assistant for a pair of seasons. Prior to that, he played two seasons for the Colorado Miners AAA team, three seasons in the
North America League and two season at the University of Wisconsin/Stout.

Leading scorer Colton Kramer makes a run at Metros history this season mounting a challenge to several Jr. Musketeers/Metros
All-Time scoring records. Colton would record a new Jr. Musketeers/Metros goal scoring record notching forty-two goals in a
single season. (This record was previously held by T.J. Reinsch during the 1990-91 season)
Colton Kramer would add another twenty-six assists for a season high of sixty-eight regular season points during the thirty-two
game regular season. His sixty-eight points this season is the third highest among all Sioux City scorers. (90-91 T.J.Reinsch
70 points, 90-91 Chris Sorum 69 points)
Did You Know…Colton Kramer had five games, where he scored three or more goals, and six games where he scored over four points.
He also had two 12-game scoring streaks where he posted 31 and 26 total points.
Mitch Nelson Lee Noel
Metros 2009-12 Metros 2007-10
Mitch Nelson would play three seasons as a Metro. His sophomore season he would log time in both JV and varsity games
recording three goals and 4 assists. The following two seasons he would record three varsity and 23 JV goals for 47 overall points.
He would place second in JV scoring twice and be selected as the Metros Most Valuable Player his senior season. Mitch would go
on to join the USA Hockey officiating program where he currently works, high school, midget and college club levels.
Lee Noel would log four seasons (07-10) for the Metros. After a freshman season of splitting the starting duties, Lee would launch
right into the varsity starter position his sophomore season and be the go-to goalie for the next three seasons. He would play in some
75 plus JV and varsity regular & post seasons games and record a record of 30-42-5. Along the way he would post 8 shut-outs and
career GAA of 3.00. He was one of four Metros to receive the MHSHL President’s Senior Academic Award and was a multi season
Academic Achievement Awards winner. Lee would go on to play four seasons of college club hockey for the Creighton Bluejays.

Rob and Chad are both former USHL Players; Rob Casper played two seasons here in Sioux City for the Musketeers and
Chad Stewart spents a season in Sioux City & another in Waterloo. Chad would also join USA Hockey officiating high school
hockey for fifteen seasons and log an additional five seasons as a member of the USHL Officials Development Program (ODP).
Marshall Tuttle would go on to play football at Morningside College where he became a stand-out All Conference GPAC Player.
Did You know… Rob is only one of six Metro players to lead his team in both Scoring and Penalty Minutes. During the 1985-86 season Rob
collected fourteen goals & four assists and recorded forty-seven minutes in the box.

League’s second leading goal scorer and third highest point scorer in Colton Kramer. The Des Moines Capitols win the regular
season with twenty-eight wins. The Kansas City Outlaws are first in the west and second overall with twenty-five. Mason City,
Kansas City Stars, Sioux Falls all record better than twenty-three victories.

The seventh seed Metros end-up facing one of the league’s top teams; the west division champions Kansas City Outlaws.
Losing just four regulation games this season the, Outlaws are one of the weekend’s favorites. The Metros are able to keep
the game close, surrendering just a single goal in the second period. However, two quick Outlaw goals in the third puts
the game out of reach for the Metros. Sioux City can’t generate any scoring and are blanked by the eventual
tournament runners-up.

4-Metros vs. Waterloo Warriors-3
February 27th, 2010
The Metros draw a more appealing opponent this time around in the sixth seed team from Waterloo. However, the Metros fail
to enough firepower to keep up with the Warriors. The Metros jump out ahead on goals from Mitchell Vos and Colton Kramer
but then leave five goals on the table in this seven to two beating by the Warriors.

4-Metros vs. Sioux Falls-2
February 28th, 2010
In what is one of the final seasons that the tournament plays a last place game, Sioux City matches up with the winless Sioux
Falls Flyers. This time its the Metros who put the points on the board, doubling up the Flyers with four goals; one each from Taylor White,
Alex Hendrickson and two from Colton Kramer. Goaltender Lee Noel stops all but one of the Flyers nineteen shots on goal.

Sioux City can only muster six wins this season. They finish the regular season last in the west and second to last overall. This is the
third season in four that the Metros JV have missed the tournament.
